The Northern Lights drawing competition was held by an architectural practice called Architecture North alongside Nottingham Trent University. The objective was to present the Newton Building - one of the main NTU buildings - in a way that presents and idea or concept. This could be done with any medium and the prize for winning the competition was a 6 week paid internship at the practice during summer.
In my entry, I set out to portray how my perspective and the perspectives of my peers have changed when regarding university and university life in the wake of the Covid19 pandemic. It begins with feelings of excitement in first year with meeting new people, experiencing new things, and starting my architecture course. This is presented through the use of bright colours.
The piece then slowly transitions to darker tones to represent how, since the pandemic hit, university life has not been the same with newfound stresses and lack of socialisation and motivation.
While I did not win the competition, it was a nice little project to work on in the midst of the stress of my final undergraduate project - linked below - which was undergoing its final stages at the time of entry. I feel honoured that I was shortlisted and the winner of the competition did very well and deserved the prize.
